Who We Are
We are a small but mighty team of developers in Nepal.
Watch the short video and read our story below.
Our story is a key part of who we are, why we are different and the values that we hold. In the summer of 2008 Mark Sears came to Nepal for a 2 week vacation that turned into 3 weeks, 4 weeks, then 3 months and well ... he is still here 3 years later. He and his wife Laurel quickly fell in love with this beautiful, small country nestled between India and China. So what is there to fall in love with? The people, the land, the culture, the traditions – there is no place like it in the world!
After the initial tourist phase wore off he met with three Nepali web developers that were interested in learning this “Ruby on Rails” stuff he kept bragging out. This turned into morning training sessions around a kitchen table with just one iMac for the 4 of them. It was the beginning of something special. Mark's ten years of tech startup experience in Canada and the US alongside Laurel's experience as a Chartered Accountant were about to be put to a whole new test. Those interactive and practical sessions around that kitchen table were the early beginnings of Sprout's intensive 6 week Rails development training. It led to our secret recipe for success, take amazingly talented people and give them the opportunity to learn, try and accomplish great things alongside other smart and passionate people. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another!
Meanwhile Tom & Alana Puskarich were on their own journey from the US to Nepal. Tom was a Sr. Solutions Engineer at Adobe Systems and Alana was a producer with National Geographic before taking the leap to move to Nepal and starting a transcription services company. A year into discovering how their talents and experience could be used to build a social enterprise in Nepal they met Mark and Laurel and the rest is history. With a similar passion and faith that a market-based approach to fighting poverty was needed, they teamed up to drive Sprout Technology forward and haven't looked back since.
The untapped potential of people in Nepal and other developing nations is one of the biggest lessons learned in Sprout's short history. It is also the driving force behind our CloudFactory distributed work platform where we are aiming to provide 1 million people with basic computer work over the next 6 years. When you strip away Rails, MongoDB, Coffeescript, iOS, Android and all the tech stuff we do at Sprout day in and day out, you’ll find a group of people that long to see change come to ourselves, our families, our communities, the nation of Nepal and the world. We want to be world-changers and it just happens to be that our weapons of choice are computers and the mind blowing power of the Internet.

Many things at Sprout represent my personal faith in Jesus. My love for God is the major reason I have come to Nepal and when Sprout was started, I committed the company to the Lord. His blessings have already been bountiful to us at Sprout and we pray you also experience these blessings by joining the team.
Faith is a very personal issue but I want you to know where I stand so you know what to expect from me and Sprout. If you become a Sprouter this will all benefit you in ways such as:
